It can be intimidating when organizing things, whether it’s a linen closet, a junk drawer, or other parts of your home. Things get cluttered quickly, especially when you have too many things and don’t have a place for them to go.

My most recent organizing project was actually for my mom, she’s currently on vacation and I’m housesitting, so I figured I’d tackle some of the projects she’s mentioned in the past. Her linen closet was overflowing with sheets, towels, and hand towels.
My first step was to head to Canadian Tire to pick up some wicker baskets for easy organization. I find having pretty baskets for organizing tends to motivate me to keep that space clean and organized.

My next step was to completely clear out the linen closet, I pulled out every single thing & threw it all on the bed. I then vacuumed the empty shelves.

I then organized everything into its own categories- the sheets into a pile, the big towels into a pile, and the hand towels into piles. I slowly went through each pile & pulled out any stained / discoloured sheets and towels. Some of these sheets and towels were several years old, so I made a pile of what to donate and what to throw away. You can also keep the older towels and use them as rags for the future! Just cut them up & store them in your laundry area to grab for easy cleaning.

After you’re done sorting through every pile, I recommend rolling up your linens and storing them in baskets, this gives your linen closet a nice, clean, fresh look! It also is clear to see how many things you have. My mom had about 50 small hand towels – which is way too many for only two people. Give your saved linens and towels a look over, do you have more than you need?

It’s okay to have extra sheet sets, although realistically, we only really need one extra set! My mom had several old sets of sheets & some weren’t even the right size for her King sized bed! I organized the sheets & folded the 2 extra flat sheets, and rolled up the fitted sheets / pillow cases for an easy grab.

I rolled up the smaller hand towels & placed them tightly into the wicker basket to prevent rolling apart. When your hand towels are rolled up like these, they’re super easy to grab & you can see how many you have.

For the bigger hand towels, I rolled them up and placed them into the basket. It’s easy to see how many towels you have, and inspires you to keep this basket neat and tidy!

For the bigger towels, I rolled up a few and placed them in a basket. I set the basket outside the shower for a quick and easy grab. For the remaining towels, I folded them up & put them on the top shelf.

Organizing can definitely be a challenge for so many people, but it’s really just taking a step back & figuring out what’s working for you, and what’s not. It takes progress to organize the spaces within your home, but with the right motivation, you can get it done!
